Organic Cotton
Similar to the designations used for organic fruits and organic vegetables, the term “organic cotton” refers to cotton that is grown using techniques and materials that are friendly to the environment.
Organic cotton growing:
•maintains soil fertility
•uses little or no toxic or synthetic fertilizers or pesticides
•contributes to biologically varied agriculture
•shuns the use of genetically engineered seeds
To be sold as organic cotton, all cotton in the United States has to meet federal regulations that dictate how the cotton can be grown. Third-party organizations certify the authenticity of organic cotton.
As more people become aware of the environment and its affect on health, organic products in food, household items, and clothing are becoming more in demand. In 2007-2008 alone, the amount of organic cotton grown by farmers across the world grew 152%.
