“April Showers… or Just a Reason to Pause for a Minute?”

Is it just me, or does April always feel like it’s trying to make a point?

One minute it’s sunshine, the next it’s raining sideways, and somehow your scrubs are damp even though you swear you parked right by the entrance. It’s that in-between kind of month… not quite winter, not fully spring. A little unpredictable. Honestly, a little like our schedules.

And maybe that’s why April feels oddly relatable.

There’s something about those rainy mornings—when everything is a bit quieter, a bit slower—that nudges you to notice things you might normally rush past. The smell of wet pavement. Trees starting to look less… tired. That one coworker who somehow always has an umbrella when no one else does (they deserve an award... honestly).

Working in healthcare, we’re used to pushing through regardless of the weather, the mood, or how many cups of coffee it takes to feel human again. Rain or shine, we show up. It’s what we do. But April, in its subtle, drizzly way, kind of invites us to soften that pace—even if just mentally.

Not stop. Just… soften.

There’s a quiet promise tucked into all this rain, even if it’s hiding behind a gray sky. It’s that reminder that things are shifting. Growing. Changing underneath it all, even when we can’t quite see it yet.

Kind of like us....

Because if we’re being honest, the past few months—winter in general—can feel long. Dark mornings, long shifts, a sense of just getting through the day rather than enjoying it. April doesn’t magically fix that. It’s not trying to be dramatic about it. It just gently suggests, “Hey… maybe we’re turning a corner.”

And maybe we are.

Maybe it’s in small things. Cracking the window open for fresh air, even if it’s only for five minutes. Taking a slightly longer way to your car just to feel something other than fluorescent lighting. Letting yourself daydream—just briefly—about warmer days, lighter evenings, maybe even a moment to sit outside without a pager going off.

Nothing big. Nothing that requires planning or effort. Just small shifts.

Because the truth is, spring doesn’t arrive all at once. It sneaks in. Quietly. Gradually. A little like that first deep breath you didn’t realize you needed.

And the rain? As inconvenient as it can be (especially when your shoes didn’t sign up for it), it’s part of that process. It’s what makes everything else possible. Growth doesn’t happen without a little mess, a little unpredictability.

We know that better than most.

So maybe April isn’t about waiting for perfect sunny days. Maybe it’s about appreciating the in-between moments—the slightly chaotic, slightly hopeful ones. The ones where things aren’t fully clear yet, but you can feel that they’re changing.

And if all else fails, at least it’s a perfectly valid excuse to sit for a minute longer, sip something warm, and pretend you’re “just waiting for the rain to pass.”

Even if you’re really just catching your breath.

And honestly… that counts too.
