Summer, A Few Thoughts

You know summer is getting close when people at work start talking differently.

Not dramatically. Nobody walks into the break room tossing beach balls around while wearing sunglasses. Nope, it’s smaller than that. It’s something softer. Someone mentions they sat outside after dinner… nice. Somebody else says they might plant tomatoes this year even though last year’s attempt died a tragic and crunchy death by July. There’s suddenly a lot of conversation about grilling things. Even people who normally communicate only through tired eye contact start saying things like, “We should get together sometime.”

There’s something unexpectedly cheerful about rotating into lighter fabrics, colorful MedCap scrub hats, soft satin caps, or those little everyday things that quietly say, “I’m trying to survive this shift, but I’d also like a tiny bit of personality while doing it.”

And maybe that matters more than we think.

Because healthcare workers spend so much time being practical. Efficient. Responsible. Summer sneaks in and reminds us we’re still allowed to enjoy beauty and humor and softness too. A floral scrub cap that feels like wearing a tiny garden. A featherweight satin hat that somehow makes a twelve-hour shift slightly less irritating. A crochet water bottle holder swinging from a shoulder like a loyal emotional support accessory carrying enough iced coffee to restore hope.

Little things become mood lifters.

Not life-changing exactly… but spirit-changing.

It’s simply remembering there’s still a softer side to life underneath all the responsibilities.

Brighter colors, porch lights, pistachio ice cream, comfortable clothes, late sunsets, and laughing with coworkers over absolutely nothing important.

A side that’s been there all along… just waiting for a little sunshine to come back out.
