Resolutions… Really?

So, it’s January again.

Someone somewhere is very excited about a brand-new planner. You? You’re just trying to remember what day it is and whether that coffee on the counter is yours or from yesterday.

And now the word resolutions is floating around. Everywhere. Like we’re all supposed to suddenly wake up as “new people” because the calendar flipped.

Really… I mean honestly?

If you work in healthcare, you already know how this goes. You resolve to eat better… until a code runs long. You resolve to sleep more… until the schedule laughs at you. You resolve to “take better care of yourself,” which is a lovely idea, but also feels vague and slightly exhausting.

Most medical staff I know aren’t making big resolutions anyway. It’s more like quiet hopes. Things you don’t post anywhere.

Like hoping your coffee stays hot for more than five minutes. Hoping you remember to eat before you’re suddenly starving. Hoping at least one thing during your shift doesn’t need adjusting, fixing, or dealing with.

That’s the real thing.

And honestly, January doesn’t feel like the moment for grand plans. It feels more like a deep breath. A slow start. Figuring out what makes the day feel a little less heavy.

Sometimes that’s as simple as wearing things that don’t ask anything from you. A scrub hat that stays where you put it. One that doesn’t pull, slide, or make you aware of it all day long - just quietly helpful.

There’s something really nice about not thinking about what you’re wearing once the shift starts. No fussing. No pressure spots. No “why did I choose this today?” moments. Just one less thing on your mental list.

And maybe that’s what resolutions look like now. Not promises. Not pressure. Just small choices that make work feel more comfortable, more familiar, more you.

You don’t need to change who you are in 2026. You already do hard things. You already care deeply. Maybe this year is just about noticing what makes your days easier — and leaning into that when you can.

So, if someone asks about your resolution, it’s okay if you don’t have one. Or if it’s something small. Or if it changes every week.

That still counts.
