Christmas

Christmas

Christmas in healthcare is… different. It can be  alarms, charting, badge reels with Santa hats, and a vague sense that December happened to you rather than with you.

Somewhere between your second cup of coffee, it hits you: oh right, it’s Christmas.

But here’s the thing no one really talks about—this version of Christmas has its own kind of magic. It’s quieter. Weirder. Unexpected. And honestly? Kind of perfect in its own messy way.

Connection doesn’t always look like a big family dinner. Sometimes it’s the coworker who saves you the last decent chair at the nurses’ station. Or the one who knows exactly when to crack a joke because everyone’s one beep away from losing it. There’s something about working holidays that fast-tracks friendships. You see each other tired, hungry, laughing, holding it together—and somehow still showing up.

Christmas shows up in small ways here. A paper snowflake taped crookedly to a wall. Someone’s playlist drifting out of a breakroom speaker. A patient wishing you Merry Christmas like they mean you, not just the holiday. Those moments land differently when you’re in scrubs.

And then there’s home—whatever “home” looks like this year. Maybe it’s a late-night meal reheated at 9 p.m. Maybe it’s breakfast-for-dinner because that’s when everyone’s finally together. Maybe it’s just you, a quiet couch, and the relief of being done for the day. All valid. All festive in their own way.

The truth is, Christmas isn’t about doing it “right.” It’s about the people you share space with—on the unit, in the car, around a table, or through a screen. It’s the text messages that say “drive safe,” the laughter that comes out of nowhere, the way you instantly relax when you’re with people who get you.

Healthcare workers are pros at holding space for others. Christmas is a gentle reminder that we get to take up some space too. To laugh loudly. To rest when we can. To enjoy connection without needing it to be perfect.

So here’s to Christmas in real life. The kind with wrinkles, interruptions, and a lot of heart. The kind where family includes friends, coworkers, and anyone who showed up when it mattered.

May your holidays be warm, a little chaotic, and filled with moments that make you think, yeah… this is the good stuff.🎄
