For healthcare professionals, summer never really ends all at once. It just quietly slips away...one sports physical, one school bus, and one cup of cold coffee at a time.
Seriously...didn't we just get used to saying, "It's finally summer?"
Now, all of a sudden, the stores have backpacks stacked to the ceiling, school buses are getting washed, and somewhere out there a parent has just realized their child needs supplies for a class they've never even heard of.
Can someone explain to me how every August the entire country suddenly can't find a pair of kid's shoes?
You know they had shoes in May.
They definitely had shoes in June.
Yet here we are, standing in a shoe store wondering if children have been quietly outgrowing their feet every Tuesday without telling anyone.
And don't even get me started on school supply lists.
When did one classroom need seventeen different folders, three glue sticks,
washable markers, dry-erase markers, colored pencils, tissues, disinfecting wipes, headphones, and something called a composition notebook that somehow isn't just...a notebook?
Apparently, education has become very specific.
You Know It's August When...
In healthcare, you don't need a calendar to know summer is winding down.
You know because every other conversation starts with...
"We just need a sports physical before Friday."
Funny how every coach in America seems to announce tryouts about forty-eight hours before they begin.
The waiting rooms fill with excited kids, slightly frazzled parents, and teenagers who suddenly remember they were supposed to get that physical "weeks ago."
We've all met them.
The parent juggling three children, two water bottles, a backpack the size of a small refrigerator, and paperwork that's somehow multiplying every time they sit down.
The teenager who answers every question with exactly one word.
The little one who's proudly wearing a brand-new backpack even though school doesn't start until next week.
Those moments never get old.
The Drive Home Starts Looking Different
Even if you don't have children heading back to school, you still know something has changed.
Have you noticed the drive home feels different?
A few weeks ago, there were kayaks on top of SUVs and coolers in every pickup truck.
Now there are school buses.
Crossing guards.
Parents practicing their deep breathing while teaching a sixteen-year-old how to park.
And somehow traffic doubles overnight.
Who invited all these cars?
Then there are the grocery stores.
One minute the front entrance is beach towels and sunscreen.
The next minute...
Boom.
Pumpkin-flavored everything.
Easy there.
Some of us are still finishing the lemonade.
The Best Seat in the House
Working in healthcare has a funny way of letting you watch the seasons through everyone else's lives…let’s just acknowledge…
You hear about first days of kindergarten.
College move-ins.
Teachers getting classrooms ready.
Grandparents wondering where all the years went.
Patients excited because football season is almost here.
Others quietly celebrating that maybe—just maybe—the house will be a little quieter once school starts.
It's like watching the whole community turn the page together.
Meanwhile...
You're still trying to remember where your favorite pen disappeared.
Let's be honest.
If hospitals ever decide to investigate missing office supplies, they're going to discover an entire underground network of wandering pens.
They leave your pocket perfectly happy.
An hour later they're working in Radiology.
It's a mystery no one has solved.
A Fresh Start Doesn't Need January
One of the nicest things about this time of year is the reminder that fresh starts don't have to happen on January first.
Sometimes a new season is enough.
Maybe this is the month you actually remember to drink the coffee before it gets cold.
Maybe you'll finally clean out that locker you've been avoiding since...well...let's just say it's seen several seasons come and go.
Maybe you'll take five extra minutes outside after your shift because those warm evenings won't last forever.
Or maybe nothing changes except your outlook.
Sometimes that's enough.
Healthcare has always been about caring for everyone else.
But every now and then it's worth noticing the little things that make a long day feel just a little easier.
A coworker friend who makes you laugh.
A patient who leaves smiling.
The first cool breeze after a hot afternoon.
A scrub hat that fits just right without needing to be adjusted every twenty minutes.
At MedCap®, we've always believed those little comforts matter. They don't ask for attention. They simply make your day a little easier, so you can focus on taking care of everyone else.
Those aren't life-changing moments.
They're something better.
They're everyday moments.
And when you string enough of them together, they somehow make even the busiest weeks feel a little lighter.
So, before summer quietly slips away, roll the windows down on the drive home one evening.
Stop for an ice cream; chocolate chip my fav.
Smile at the little kid wearing a backpack that's almost bigger than they are.
Because before we know it, someone will be saying...
"Can you believe it's almost the holidays?"
Let's not rush it.
We've still got a little summer left.
